I have been a birdwatcher for most of my life. I love the outdoor spaces this hobby takes me to, the patience and solitude involved, and getting to peek into a totally different world. Although I’m mixed Mexican and white American, I look very white, and my appearance has afforded me so much privilege.  While birdwatching I have walked off trails, I have loudly grumbled about people’s dogs scaring away birds, I have trespassed more than once, and no one has ever said anything to me about it. So why can’t a black man in Central Park minding his own business just watch some damn birds in peace? Systemic and pervasive racism is the only explanation, the consequences of which are playing out in real people’s lives.
